This half-day adventure dives deep into the real-life inspirations behind Sherlock Holmes, taking you back to the very place where the legend was born. Arthur Conan Doyle created Holmes while studying at the University of Edinburgh Medical School, inspired by one of his lecturers, the remarkable Scottish surgeon Joseph Bell. His razor-sharp observation skills and logical thinking became the blueprint for the famous detective we know today.
Your experience begins with a private, guided walking tour of Edinburgh, led by a costumed storyteller who brings the past vividly to life. You’ll explore the streets, landmarks and darker corners that shaped Conan Doyle’s imagination, from grave-robbing tales at Greyfriars Cemetery to the medical discoveries that influenced early forensic science. Along the way, you’ll uncover shocking stories of crime, science and ambition in a city transformed by the Industrial Revolution.
Guiding you through the mystery is Joseph Bell himself, brought to life as an AI CharacTour. A master surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, Bell combines sharp wit, fascinating insights and keen observational skills to challenge how you see the world around you.
After your two-hour guided tour, the experience continues with a scientific lunch that’s anything but ordinary. Head to a restaurant where chemistry meets cuisine, and enjoy foaming, bubbling cocktails or mocktails alongside creative food experiments. It’s interactive, playful and the perfect way to warm up while swapping theories and clues.

The tour guide will wait for you at the meeting point. She/he will be wearing a bowler hat or a deerstalker and a green light lanyard.
This experience is available to book Monday to Sunday at 10am.
