The Main Event
Immerse yourself in everything Royal and visit The King's Gallery located by Buckingham Palace on the old site of a private chapel for Queen Victoria.
Developed as an art gallery after the chapel was destroyed in the second world war, in 1997 the gallery was expanded and modernised and opened by Queen Elizabeth II in May 2002 as part of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations and today hosts a program of exhibitions from the Royal Collection.
The current exhibition is Royal Portraits A Century of Photography - and will run from the 17th May 2024 to the 6th October 2024.
For centuries, portraiture has played a vital role in shaping the public’s perception of the Royal Family. This exhibition will chart the evolution of royal portrait photography from the 1920s to the present day, bringing together more than 150 photographic prints, proofs and documents from the Royal Collection and the Royal Archives.
Discover works from the most celebrated royal photographers, from Cecil Beaton and Dorothy Wilding to Annie Leibovitz and Rankin. Explore some of the close relationships between royal sitters and photographers, seen most clearly through the lens of Antony Armstrong-Jones (later Lord Snowdon), who married Princess Margaret in 1960.
The exhibition will shed light on behind-the-scenes processes, from photographers’ handwritten annotations to never-before-seen correspondence with members of the Royal Family and their staff, these materials will reveal the stories behind some of the most celebrated photographs ever taken of the Royal Family.
This exhibition is taking place at The King's Gallery, Buckingham Palace formerly known as The Queen’s Gallery.

Sunday 24th December 2023 - Last admission at 3pm. The Gallery closes at 4pm.

The King's Gallery is part of a working royal palace so sometimes closure can happen at short notice.
The Royal Horseguards Hotel – Afternoon tea served daily from 1pm – 4:30pm
Not available on the following dates: all bank holidays, 6th May & 24th-31st December inclusive.
All bookings must be made at least 14 days in advance and are subject to availability.

Your voucher is valid for 12 Months from the date of issue.
Please note you must have booked and taken your experience before the expiry date.
Who Can Go
- Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
- Please note that tickets are strictly non-refundable and non-transferable once booked.
- Upon arrival, you will pass through an airport-style security check.
- Toilets and baby-care facilities are available.
- Pushchairs can be taken into the Gallery except at very busy times, when they will need to be left in the Undercroft on the ground floor and collected at the end of your visit.
- Photography and filming for non-commercial purposes are welcome at the Gallery.
What about Insurance?
The centres contracted with us hold public liability insurance. We also hold contingency liability cover. You will not be liable for accidental damage to equipment, except where damage has been caused as a result of recklessness or wilful negligence.
A cancellation indemnity, subject to terms, is included with every voucher.
