Often called the Home of Horseracing, Newmarket’s gallops are the beating heart of the sport. Spanning an incredible 2,500 acres, the training grounds include 50 miles of turf gallops and 14 miles of artificial tracks. Every single day, more than 3,000 horses and 80 trainers use this vast stretch of Jockey Club land to prepare for race day. This two-hour guided tour gives you rare access to it all.
Starting at 8.00am outside the National Horseracing Museum, you’ll head straight out to the hallowed training grounds. There’s something special about being there early morning, watching strings of thoroughbreds going through their paces. It’s a side of racing most people never see.
Your knowledgeable guide will explain how the different gallops are used, why the terrain matters, and how each surface plays a role in getting a horse race-fit. You’ll learn about the history of this unique landscape and why it has become the centre of British flat racing for centuries.
And the best part? You’re not watching from a distance. You’re right there, on the grounds themselves, seeing some of racing’s finest athletes at work. Even if someone isn’t glued to the racing calendar, it’s hard not to be impressed by the scale, beauty and tradition of it all.
For birthdays, Christmas or a surprise for someone who lives and breathes racing, this tour offers a proper behind-the-scenes look at the sport they love.
