Led by a friendly, highly-qualified instructor, you’ll start with a full introduction to the activity, including safety guidance and techniques to help you get the most out of your time in the gorge. All essential equipment is provided, including wetsuits to keep you warm and comfortable as you make your way through the rushing water.

Then the fun really begins! Gorge walking is an exhilarating mix of climbing, wading, sliding, and splashing your way through the natural watercourse. There’s no bank to escape to, the only way is through the water! Along the way, you’ll scramble over boulders, slide down natural waterspouts, sit under tumbling waterfalls, and leap into deep plunge pools. Every step offers a new burst of excitement and a fresh chance to test your courage and coordination.

And just when you think the adventure couldn’t get any better, it’s time for the main event: an epic 45ft abseil from a bridge overlooking the gorge! Standing at the edge, heart racing, you’ll clip in, take a deep breath, and slowly lower yourself down the rock face under the expert supervision of your instructor. The sense of achievement when you reach the bottom is incredible, a perfect mix of exhilaration and pride that you’ll remember for years to come.

This half day experience also includes a spot of local cave exploration, adding an extra layer of discovery to your adventure. Can I take the whole family?

Anybody aged 7 or over can take part. You will need to have a basic fitness level to participate in this activity, these sessions are classed as beginner level.

The site strives to be as accessible as possible, however, as an adventure park, some areas may be challenging. Please contact the venue for guidance on specific accessibility requirements.

At How Stean Gorge, you’ll meet the instructors in the reception area.

What do I need to bring?

- Swimming costume/underwear, (to wear under the wetsuit)

- Sturdy footwear you are happy to get wet (eg, old Trainers, walking boots).

- Towel and spare clothes for a hot shower afterwards.

- Any medication you may need.

Is gorge walking different from ghyll scrambling and canyoning?

Gorge walking is where there is no bank on either side of the water (so the only way is through the water), whereas ghyll scrambling has a small bank on either side for easier exits.
