The day kicks off with a warm welcome from a friendly, highly-qualified instructor, who will guide participants through each activity. Safety is a top priority, with all necessary equipment provided, including wetsuits and harnesses, so everyone can take on each challenge with confidence. Small group sizes, with no more than eight participants per instructor, ensure personalised guidance and attention throughout the day.
The five thrilling activities are designed to test courage, teamwork, and skill. Begin with the Via Ferrata and High Ropes Course, scaling rock faces and navigating heights while soaking up stunning scenery. Next, take on abseiling, descending dramatic cliffs under expert supervision and feeling the rush of adrenaline with every step.
After the heights, it’s time to get closer to nature with a gorge walk and ghyll scrambling adventure. Jump, wade, and scramble through rushing water, exploring hidden corners of the gorge that are normally out of reach. Then, venture underground with caving, navigating tunnels and chambers while discovering the fascinating formations of the gorge. The day finishes with canoeing, gliding across the water and enjoying a peaceful yet invigorating finale surrounded by nature.
A delicious lunch is provided midday to refuel and relax, giving participants a chance to share stories from the morning’s adventures. As a bonus, the experience also includes free entry to the gorge on the day, allowing extra time to explore and enjoy the spectacular surroundings.

This is a shared experience, group sizes are usually up to 8 people.
Lunch is provided at the How Stean Café and includes Lunch includes a jacket potato, cheese and salad.
In the event of bad weather, one of the activities may not be possible. Activities may be supplemented for another option if this happens, or you will get to do more of one of the remaining activities.

Please note you will need to provide your own transport to canoeing and caving activities, a short drive from How Stean.

The centres contracted with us hold public liability insurance. We also hold contingency liability cover. You will not be liable for accidental damage to equipment, except where damage has been caused as a result of recklessness or wilful negligence.
A cancellation indemnity, subject to terms, is included with every voucher.
All you have to do is pay for the experience you wish to purchase and we’ll send a voucher and booking information to you or directly to the recipient, then you just need to check the info and book your experience.
How fit do I need to be?
You will need to have a basic fitness level to participate in this activity, these sessions are classed as beginner level.

Can I take the whole family?
Anybody aged 10 or over can take part. It is suitable from 10 to 70+ years (children must be accompanied by an adult).
Those who do not take part can watch the Via Ferrata, Bridge Abseil and part of the Gorge Walking / Ghyll Scrambling from the bridge.
What happens if an activity can not go ahead because of the weather?
In the event of bad weather, one of the activities may not be possible. Activities may be supplemented for another option if this happens, or you will get to do more of one of the remaining activities.
Where do we meet?
At How Stean Gorge, you’ll meet the instructors in the reception area.
Please arrive 30 mins before your activity.
What do I need to bring?
- A set of comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. If the weather isn’t looking too good it is advisable to bring along a waterproof jacket and trousers (For the Via Ferrata and Caving).
- A pair of trainers or boots that you don’t mind getting wet for gorge walking.
- A swimming costume or trunks/shorts to wear underneath the wetsuit (Whilst gorge walking / abseiling).
- Wellies, these are recommended whilst caving.
- Towel and toiletries, so you can freshen up at the end of the day.
- Dry footwear and spare clothes for when you have finished.
- Any medication you require including sun cream, hats, gloves etc.
What’s the itinerary?
Meet at 9:30am at How Stean Gorge Café to check you have completed your online consent form (Please complete before you arrive).
Activities Start at 10am.
Firstly you’ll put on a safety harness and helmet and enjoy the challenge of our unique Via Ferrata high wire course, which is only 1 of 3 in the UK.
Following that, you will get changed into our warm purpose made canyoning wetsuits and experience the thrill of the 45 ft bridge abseil. From the bridge, you descend into the gushing water below.
You will then go gorge walking or ghyll scrambling as it is sometimes known. You will feel the force of the water as you forge your way upstream. Climb through waterfalls and jump into deep pools before you turn around and enjoy sliding down waterspouts and going with the flow back to the beginning.
A well-earned lunch will be provided in the café before starting the adventures ahead. Lunch includes a jacket potato, cheese and salad.
In the afternoon you will head to Scar House Reservoir for a session of open canoeing before exploring some of the caves and underground passages which are all around us in Upper Nidderdale.
