They break down the whole standing-up thing, the balance, the wave-reading – they make it feel doable. With their patient guidance, suddenly, you're catching waves and feeling like you're on top of the world.

Not only is surfing so much fun, it's a great form of exercise and many say that it's extremely therapeutic, with the waves rushing beneath you and you tackling the beast of the sea. You become present in the moment as the only thing you have to think about is staying on the board, all the other thoughts in your mind disappear for a while.

There is no way you'll leave a day of surf lessons with anything other than a big smile on your face!

If you need a little encouragement to get out there and start catching those waves, here are a few reasons to convince you that you need to learn how to surf:

Fitness - Surfing is a full body workout but the best thing is that you won't realise it at the time as you'll be having too much fun. Surfing increases your strength, balance and your overall fitness so don't be surprised if you ache a bit after your first lesson!

Mental health - Surfing might be good for the body but it's also good for the soul. You are forced to be in the present moment, your mind can't go wondering off, so it's a great escape from the pressures of daily life. Surfing can also help boost your confidence. As you learn more and more about what you're capable of out there in the waves, this spills over into your everyday life.

Being out in nature - Being on the beach and in the sea has many therapeutic benefits. Breathing in the fresh salty air can be a real tonic. You'll also gain a new found respect for the natural world, it's an environment you can't control and it doesn't care who you are, what you do for a living or how long you've been surfing for, it demands respect. Many surfers become involved in environmental projects like beach clean ups, to help preserve the precious eco-system and ensure they have somewhere to surf in the future.

Making new friends - If you're learning how to surf in a group, there's a good chance you'll all be friends by the end of the lesson! Sharing the experience with like-minded people, cheering each other on and celebrating when you stand up for the first time, all adds to the incredible experience.

Travel - Once you're into your surfing, it can take you all over the world. There are so many gorgeous locations around the world that are perfect for surfing, you'll soon be taken over by the travel bug and want to see them all.
