Britain’s drinking culture is undergoing a major shift, with younger generations increasingly choosing meaningful experiences and sober activities. According to a UK 2025 study, around 61% of young people said they have been going out less in the past year. Several factors, including the current economic climate and heightened safety concerns, are driving the shift, with 53% of respondents saying they are spending less on going out than they did the previous year.
Britain is known for its drinking culture, but with this new trend, younger generations are moving away from traditional norms. With nearly half of young adults aged 18 to 34 reporting that they are reducing or cutting out alcohol altogether, the shift toward experiences shows no sign of slowing down. WonderDays is supporting this cultural shift with more than 1,000 experience days that offer people new ways to socialise, celebrate and connect without relying on alcohol. More time and money are being invested into hobbies, travel, wellbeing and shared activities.
The shift is affecting all ages across the country, and even altering children’s attitudes, with the number of 8 to 15-year-olds who have tried alcohol dropping from 45% in 2003 to just 14% in 2022.
Over the years, several new factors have altered the drinking culture, including current trends and generational changes. A focus on health and wellness has played a big part, with more people spending time focusing on their mental and physical health. People are now prioritising gym attendance and overall wellness over alcohol consumption and spending more time enjoying walks and reconnecting with nature. Research suggests that 73% of Gen Z use gyms, with more than half preferring to spend an hour working out than at the bar.
People prefer to create lasting memories they will remember, taking on thrilling new adventures and shared experiences that aren't surrounded by alcohol and late nights. The desire for better value alternatives has also altered people's preferences for how they spend their money, especially as the cost of club and drinks has been rising. Social media has also played a role in changing behaviour towards the culture, with more influencers sharing lifestyle content and new adventures they experience away from drinking, such as travelling and taking up new hobbies.
Alcohol-free alternatives have recently been increasing in popularity as well, as they allow people to still experience the social and functional benefits without the negative side effects of alcohol. It helps to moderate alcohol consumption and focus on a healthier lifestyle. The Alcohol-free market in the UK has surged, with the market value more than doubling to £362 million in 2023 and sales volume increasing by 66% since 2020.
