Since the television has invaded our homes in the 1950’s and became part of the furniture during the 1960’s, our attitude and relationship towards television has changed hugely. No longer the wired-up box in the corner of the room, the humble TV has become a statement piece of iconography now often wall mounted and pride of place as the centre piece of the home.
For decades, its easy to remember families gathered around to watch their favourite TV show at the same time every week as well as family feuds about what we are watching together and who has control over the remote! The reason a TV show like The Royle Family existed was that it totally captured the idea of the 90’s family who were essentially sat around, living their life centred around the television. A decade later the TV obsession would remain, but the landscape would look very different.
The peak into such trends waned significantly as technology moved on, with the debate as to what we are watching no longer relevant given our ability to record live TV and with most houses having more than one TV nowadays. The TV may no longer be the focal point of the family Friday evening but its importance in people’s lives remains stronger than ever. I mean, the televisions role in our modern lives is summed up by the fact we have Gogglebox, where we are actually watching a TV show which is watching people watch a TV show!
The explosion of options available to us as a viewer enhanced by the 1000’s of channels available for us to browse, without even going into the plethora of options provided by streaming services too.
It is all too telling of TV’s significance in modern day life that our television programmes have evolved from Water Cooler Office Talk, to somewhere to visit at the weekend with many of our most loved TV shows are now spawning immersive experiences, where you can walk your way around the sets and visit places in person. These places and characters have visited us in our homes once or twice a week through our TV’s but now we can physically go to see, hear, and touch these places with which we have such affinity.
Such experiences available would be:
The Emmerdale Experience – A staple of British TV for decades, this hugely popular tour never fails to deliver. Visit Home Farm or nip in for a pint at the Woolpack, this guided coach tour is available seasonally and lasts around 4 hours. Immerse yourself in everything “Emmerdale” and even visit the original Farm which to TV show was centred around.
Talking of Staple British TV, nothing can be more iconic than Coronation Street. On the Coronation Street Tour you can gain exclusive access to the behind the scenes tour of Manchester’s most well-known street. There are so many iconic places to visit as you walk the fabled cobbles, none more so than Roy’s Rolls and The Rovers Return. Coupled with a hotel stay so you can enjoy the sites of what Manchester has to offer – What more could you want!
Away from the obvious staples of British TV, we are now at one of the phenomena to sweep the world with its popularity – Game Of Thrones. On the Game of Thrones tour you can visit one of the most well known TV series of all time. When you tour Carnlough, Lordsport, the House of Greyjoy, Renly's Encampment, the Dark Hedge, and other sites, you are on one of the best geographical experiences you are likely to take. It's where the allure of cult television meets stunning natural landscapes, creating a truly unforgettable experience.
The Fawlty Towers Experience – Que? Ok, so now we are talking iconic! Given this show aired nearly 50 years ago, it’s a testament to its creators that not only is this still one of the UK’s best loved sitcoms, but people still flock to themed events in its name. This is an immersive, theatrical show and dining experience inspired by this much-loved series and includes a hotel stay to book!
If you are going to go more legendary than Fawlty Towers, the only step UP from that can only be “Only Fools and Horses tour”. The much-acclaimed sitcom that ran on and off for decades, with sporadic Christmas specials appearing into the 2000’s! THAT SCENE!!!! That’s all that’s needed to be said surely. The now infamous scene where Del Boy falls through the bar was voted the most comedic moment in British TV history. This guided coach tour you will stand on the spot where Batman and Robin saw off the muggers and learn all about Rodney and Del whilst visiting renowned spots such as Sid’s Café and of course, The Nags Head.
