The Ford GT40 is an iconic American-British endurance racing car, renowned for its remarkable success, especially at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Developed in the early 1960s, it emerged from a rivalry between Ford and Ferrari, following Ford's failed attempt to buy Ferrari. The GT40, with its name reflecting its height in inches (GT for Grand Touring and 40 for its height), featured a revolutionary mid-engine design and was constructed using lightweight materials for enhanced performance.

Initially equipped with a 4.2-litre alloy V8 engine, the GT40 saw various upgrades, most notably to a powerful 7.0-litre engine in its later versions. This car gained legendary status due to its dominance at Le Mans, particularly marked by its historic 1-2-3 finish in 1966, symbolising the first win for an American manufacturer in a major European race since the 1920's. This victory was not just a triumph on the track but also a significant moment in motorsport history, reflecting American ingenuity and competitive spirit.

The GT40's various iterations, including the Mk I, Mk II, and the road-going Mk III, highlight its evolution and adaptability. Its legacy has extended far beyond the racing world, influencing Ford's global image and inspiring the creation of modern tributes like the 2005 and 2017 Ford GT.
