Step into the fascinating story of humanity with the Crash Course in Archaeology at the British Museum, a full-day experience that is more than just a casual wander through the museum. Guided by a professional archaeologist with over 20 years of experience, this unique experience brings ancient civilisations to life.
Throughout this crash course you'll gain an understanding of the journey of humankind. From the very origins of humanity in Africa to the rise of agriculture, the birth of cities, and the invention of writing, the day reveals how the world we know today was shaped.
Along the way, you’ll discover the science of archaeology itself, how experts date artefacts, why civilisations rise and fall, and the detective work that helps piece together our shared past. You’ll get hands-on too, by trying out the world’s oldest known board game, whose rules were painstakingly decoded by a British Museum scholar. And of course, you’ll delve into the gripping, often daring lives of the archaeologists who uncovered these ancient mysteries.
The British Museum’s world-class collections provide the backdrop for your learning, from Stone Age humans and Neanderthals to mighty empires like Greece, Rome, Persia, the Mayans, the Aztecs, and the Vikings. It’s a true journey across time and continents, with insights that you simply won’t find on a standard tour.
Whether you’re shopping for a gift for someone fascinated by history, or you want to treat yourself to a day of discovery, this Crash Course in Archaeology is the perfect choice. With so much packed into one day, it’s an experience that will stay with you long after you’ve left the museum’s grand halls.
