The Play That Goes Wrong is the longest running comedy in the West End.
You all know the classic whodunnit story but this one has a twist - everything that could go wrong, does!
The Play That Goes Wrong is a comedic play that was written by Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, and Henry Shields, all members of the British theatre company Mischief Theatre. The play follows the Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society as they attempt to put on a murder mystery play called "The Murder at Haversham Manor."
As the title suggests, everything that can go wrong does go wrong throughout the production, leading to a series of hilarious mishaps, accidents, and comedic moments. The set design, props, lighting, sound effects, and even the actors themselves all become victims of the mayhem, resulting in a chaotic and farcical performance.
The humour in The Play That Goes Wrong stems from the contrast between the actors' attempts to stay in character and perform their roles while dealing with numerous unexpected and disastrous situations. From malfunctioning set pieces and missed cues to forgotten lines and physical comedy, the play presents a barrage of comedic mishaps that escalate as the show progresses.
The play has gained popularity for its slapstick comedy, physical gags, and clever staging, which often involves actors improvising and interacting with the audience. It provides a lighthearted and entertaining experience, as audiences witness the cast's increasingly desperate efforts to salvage the production, despite the mounting chaos and their own shortcomings as performers.
The Play That Goes Wrong has been widely acclaimed for its comedic timing and ability to make audiences laugh with its exaggerated and exaggeratedly flawed portrayal of a theatrical production gone awry.
