Once you’ve got your accommodation in place, it’s time to figure out how to make the most of your short break in York City Center. Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered.

Haven’t got round to booking your accommodation? No problem! We have many York Hotel breaks!

Before you steam ahead- it may be worth noting that price guidelines are based on Adult Tickets- but some attractions will be even cheaper for kids!

Day 1

AM- York Shambles (FREE!)

Stroll into the iconic York shambles market, rumored to have inspired Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley. Filled with unique and quirky shops, brimming with character and charm. There’s also a large market and ample food options for every taste and appetite. Rest your shopping bags and take a bite of the delicious food on offer.

PM- York Cocoa Works (From £12.50)

Now that you’ve been inspired by the sweet delights on offer in the lively Shambles market, it’s time to make your own! From a tasting journey to a comprehensive chocolate masterclass, there’s a range of price points and experiences for every chocoholic! Plus, you can take home your choccy goodies to share later (or not!)

Day 2

AM- York City Walls (FREE!)

York city walls are the most complete medieval city walls in England, and they’re free to walk! They give fantastic, elevated views around the city, and if you look closely, you will see markers for points of interest. Perfect for a city stroll taking in the sights, or if you want to know more historic facts, you can choose to purchase an audio guide for just £1.99!

PM- York River Cruise (From £15)

After walking around the city, take a river cruise through the city! Yes, it’s time to rest your legs and take a more relaxed approach to sightseeing. Grab yourself a nice Yorkshire cuppa, and watch as the stunning landmarks float by. Why not grab lunch on the go and jump aboard the Fish and Chips cruise?

PM- The York Dungeons (From £19)

After cruising in style, it’s time to get your blood pumping again with spine chilling scares in the Dungeons! After taking in the glorious sights of modern-day York, you can learn what happened throughout York’s colorful history from a truly entertaining theatrical delivery. For that little extra fright, you can opt for the Late’s visit, open exclusively to over 18’s. Proceed if you dare- eeekk!

Day 3

AM- The National Railway Museum- (FREE!)

Home to the record-breaking Mallard and the infamous Flying Scotsman, the National Railway Museum is fun for all. There’s a lot to look at, so why not take a break with a clotted cream and jam scone whilst you’re there? Trust me- they’re delicious! The museum is free to enter, but donations are welcome and appreciated. There are extra activities to enjoy such as The Flying Scotsman VR experience which whizzes you back in time through the Railway era, or the interactive Wonderlab- part of the museum’s modern transformation.

PM- York Minster (From £20)

Record breaking transport completed, time for a more stationary icon with the largest gothic cathedral in the UK. View the expansive stained glass, stunning architecture and even the seat of the Archbishop of York. For panoramic city views, take the tower climb up the 275 steps, if you’re brave enough!

PM- Ghost Tour (Usually £10-£20)

You’ve heard about it in in the dungeons- now see the real areas for yourself! There are so many Ghost Tours in York, it’s impossible to include just one here. Plus, it really depends on your preferences! There are spooky walks, witchy themes or even Ghost bus tours (After all, we just climbed a lot of steps!). I would advise doing a little research here- but as most tours are daily, you shouldn’t have an issue finding one for you!

Restaurant options are truly expansive- from grabbing a quick bite on the go, to savoring a real culinary experience. There’s something for each and every food enthusiast. We enjoyed evening dining at two very special restaurants (I highly recommend Rustique and Little Italy), and grabbed takeout on the third night, after a few full-on days.

There are so many things to do in York and lots that are not included on this list. Plus, we haven’t even left the city center. This is just a very flexible and affordable itinerary from our recent York city break. You can absolutely see the best of the city without breaking the bank.  Was it worth our 3-hour drive? Well, we can’t wait to go back- we’re already planning our next trip!
