Led by an eccentric, quick-witted character guide, this isn’t just a stroll around the city. It’s an up-close adventure through York’s cobbled streets, packed with surprising secrets, colourful characters and hidden corners that most people walk straight past. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a local who thinks they’ve seen it all, you’ll discover a side of York you never knew existed.
You’ll pass some of the city’s most famous landmarks, including the iconic York Minster, historic Bootham Bar and the much-loved Bettys Café Tea Rooms. But this tour goes beyond the guidebook highlights. Expect tales of York’s most infamous names, including Guy Fawkes and Dick Turpin, as your guide reveals the truths behind the legends.
As you wind through the city’s “gates” (that’s streets, in York!), you’ll uncover concealed courtyards, unusual statues, secluded snickelways and curious artefacts hidden in plain sight. Every corner has a story, and your lively guide delivers them with humour, energy and plenty of personality.
And then there’s the chocolate. York’s sweet heritage is woven into the experience with a delicious handmade taster from York's Chocolate Story. Crafted right in the city, it’s a fitting treat in a place famous for its confectionery roots.
As a gift idea, it’s perfect for birthdays, anniversaries or a thoughtful surprise for someone who prefers experiences over “stuff”. Give them the chance to see York through fresh eyes, hear stories they’ve never heard before, and savour a little taste of the city along the way.
Meeting Point: Meet your guide at the forgotten Davygate Graveyard, opposite Cooplands (on Davygate). Please arrive at least 5 minutes early to check-in.
Tour Finishes: At the famous Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma Gate Street Sign (YO1 7NT).
The tour lasts approximately 1 hour 10 minutes and covers a gentle walking route through York’s historic streets.
This is an outdoor walking tour, so you don’t enter York Minster or other buildings. However, your guide will share fascinating stories and point out features of these iconic sites as you pass them.
